I have been playing Guild Wars for almost 3 years. I am a laid back player who likes to take my time and get all the neat little quarks of the game. Very Fun! I however, now have a problem. My main is a ranger..she has all the secondary professions open..but how in the world do i start to work on getting my Obsidian Armor?
Ive tried pugs and even with a maxed ss/lb for cryway there are none that stick around for the full haul..1 month of trying = 1 ecto.

So my ranger-playing friends? How to i do the improbable? How do i earn my obsidian armor?

Buy the materials with gold you get from other easy sources, such as the Xunlai tournament which takes no game time yet can easily earn over 100k in less then a month. Spend your ingame time doing things that won't earn you ectos, but will earn you gold. Learn a farm you can do with either your Ranger or another character, or do lots of vanquishes.

In FoW Speedclears, they use R/rt splinter-barrage rangers for the Cryway build for it. I think an average run takes...probably 30-45 mins? Not sure on the time. But in hm, it generally yields about 2-4 shards per run.

If you havent tried that, you should. If not...youll have to do as Striken7 said.

I agree with Striken. Don't worry about farming the materials directly. Instead focus on earning the gold to buy your materials from others. Vanquishing, farming, and Xunlai tournament are good sources of income.

If you looking to save up for Obsidian Armor, try not to get distracted by other shinies along the way. Getting my own ranger her FoW armor took an age as I'd see a bow I'd like, or I'd get one of my other characters new armor, or things like that

If you want your Ranger to earn you all of your Ectos and Shards, you are going to be doing a lot of Farming. Still, B/P Rangers in FoW rape. Trapper Duos rape Aatxes and Smites, and B/P can plow through TotPK. There was also an article in the Farming section of the Campfire subforum that had a solo Touch Ranger UW Farmer... mebbe check that out.

Otherwise, if you don't care how you get your mats and cash, just do a farm that your Ranger can do and buy the mats.

Hollygen is 100% correct in saying not to get distracted by other shinies. This will throw you off track again and again until you can keep from impulse buying, even if you do have the cash to do so; otherwise, you'll never get your Obsidian Armor.

Farm obisidian shards like my brother did before quiting GW. They are slightly cheaper than ecto's.

I hope you realize that anet gives you many character slots for the very purpose of making DIFFERENT classes. Yes you could use your ranger to get all the ecto/shards, but instant gratification is the american way of life. Make an Ele or make a sin, they are great farmers and fun to play the game with.

I don't know anyone that EXCLUSIVELY used the char they wanted their fow to earn the obby shards/ecto. Its unnecessary and impractical.

Make sure to get your 5k faction from zaishen challenge everyday for a Z-key. That is an easy 5k/day.

Then, make a sin and farm. This is probably the best way.

its 2k from zaishen challenge and 6k from zaishen elite per day.

I Strongly recommend mine, you dont need even I made 1 obs armor in 1 month.

this will make you earn about 80k at the start,use observe mode, guild ladder, hero battle ladder to do this, when you know what guilds and players are good you will start to earn more, 5 tournament rewards = 1 zkey = 5k, Im getting now around 180-215 per month, you have to wait till the update (not less than 1 month)so you get your reward from the xunlai tournament agent,while this happens, do some PvP or farm in the underworld, or whatever you want to do, when you earn 225k go buy 21-22 ectos for 100k, till you have only ectos
go to kamadan or lion's arch(Kamadan is 100% better!) and take a look at the prices of EVERY ITEM, start making friends and do a lot of price checks on items but here on guru preferably ( I have some specific items which I will not mension for my own convenience xD ) for example you find a torment shield for 100k+20 ecto, check it is not customized "PvP" (some people easily fall on that) because you won't get rid of it, and youll loose a lot of time, well you get it at +20 you could easily sell for +28-30( EASY 10 ECTOS !!)

I get about 80 ectos per month( sometimes more and sometimes less), with some experience, patience and luck you get very good trades. this kind of "trades" are not about spending much time, just about finding special oportunities.

Rangers are great at farming. Either direct UW farming with trapper or conflagration toucher, or farm the cash for them.

Think in 5K chunks, you need 105 ectos and shards. If you farm smites in the underworld, you should get 1-2 per run, so thats about 60-70 runs, at 2 per day, thats a month. Or, you could elite zaishen farm for an easy ZKey in 20-25 mins. I used to farm Totem axes, they sold for 5K easy and you could get 6-8 an hour. Unfortunately, they are not so easy to sell now and probably 3-4k. Then there is boss farming for elite tomes, Raptors are easy for a ranger, stone elementals, gargoyles, all in HM.

Easiest thing is Xunlai tournament predictions, but whatever, you can do it all on your ranger, no need to sell out on a Sin.

Yay such great suggestions! The torunament house i have an account with..however i must be unlucky for the points are staying in the 30 range *blush* Not much into pvp.
I am looking at the various ranger farming builds and will definatly give those a try this weekend.
As for other toons..yes i have them but none that i love to play as much as my Sia! And yes i promise to stay away from the shiney sparkley drool-worthy items that i dont need *sigh* though that is true that that will be the hardest *grin*

I have a question with the tournament house.

I signed up on the website you gave me and made my predictions, then what? I registered my account name in game from the tournament person and it says in order to participate I need a tournament token.

Does predicting get me profit passively? Or do I need to spectate tournaments to get prizes?

I farmed all I need for my FoW armor with my Ranger. After all My Ranger is the only PvE character I have, or have ever had in 33 months of GWs

I got mine prior to Zkeys being around.

One word for ya, Feathers.

Yup I made my fortune with feathers, farming Factions Noob Island or Nahpui Quarter. I used to make Con Stes and sell those, but then stopped and just sold stacks of materials individually to save some time.

Nahpui will net you bone, feathers and Iron(from salvaging) while the noob Island will get you bone, feathers and non max crap golds that you can sell unidentified.

I farmed at least 3 stacks of ecto using my conflagration toucher in uw and its even easier to do the chaos planes now that you have the wailing lords for super energy gain. If you are really good at timing you can perma obsidian flesh on your ranger as well to solo uw for good profits in the chaos planes,bone pits,spawning pools,and smites.

To get mine...

I sold tons of fireworks during Gaile's going away party, with it's double party-point events. Sold crates and stacks of fireworks to those that wanted them, and participated in the events all weekend to get more. I made most of the gold I needed for FoW in that one weekend.

Granted, that particular event is never going to happen again, but if there are ever consumable/tradeable drops for an event (and you don't want to use them) use that to your advantage.

I was wanting to do the same with my Monk but I have given up and have decided to go for 15K Kurzick instead as an alternative.It would take you more than 6 months even if you did xunlai tournament trading zkeys for gold.

It is possible the UW doesn't like you the same as me there is lots of nice 15K armour other than FoW.It is not only the mats you need but it is how much favour there is when you want to go get it.

just get faction to trade for zkeys...i easily made 100k in a week
AB, zaishen challenge/elite, monk for RA...

100k in a week isn't even a lot but in a month or two you can get FoW. I don't even play that often anymore...like average is 2 hours a week for me
